365 Day 3 & 4 Twofer!

Hey Everybody! Sorry for the lack of update, but I had good reason, I was at the Tears for Fears show! They came down to the Broward Performing Arts Center and rocked the house! Now I gotta admit, outside of “Shout”, and “Head Over Heels” I wasn’t a T4F fan. This was probably the finest show I’ve been to since The Eagles came to town a little while ago.
TearsForFears1
TearsForFears2
2 hours pretty much straight rockin. No breaks, unless you count the “Leave-the-stage-and-cheer-for-encore” thing as a break. The whole setup was perfect. I’ll definietly be looking for more shows there. Very classy venue. Maybe hit an opera? Sounds like fun to me :D

I’ll have another one for Thursday night, not of the show, but I got an idea what I want a shot of. Let’s see if it turns out!

365-Day 2

Just got the retro-cam app for my phone, and got my hair cut. So…put the two together and got myself a very overly dramatic self portrait. Gives me the idea to try to recreate this shot with a nice camera tomorrow…should be fun!

SelfPortrait

You can get a similar effect using the hipster camera app on the iphone. Amazing how popular recreating old, scratchy, single lens vintage film cameras has become.

Starting a 365

This is a short one folks, I’m starting a 365 project. Starting tonight, I will post a picture and a short post about it every night. I’ll try to make sure it’s not another shot from the same moment, I will be taking at least 1 shot per day, and putting it up. Here’s the first one: Cross-stitching

Gena was cross-stitching(crosstitch? spelling failure) and I was playing with setting my camera to black and white, and +contrast and +sharpness to their maximum, while also adding further grain to it in DXO. I’m loving the B&W grain look. I’m venturing more and more into grain. Really think I’m starting to not only simply let it slide, but embracing it. Grain is good. I think the famous James Gecko said that. (ooh, the false movie reference-ish. I’m so clever :P )

Something my photo teacher showed/ taught us ( or tried to anyway, some concepts take a while to sink in); was asking yourself, “Does this image need color?”. If it does, go for it. If it doesn’t then why not try it in B&W? I adore color, but I’m trying to make that distinction, and this picture had plenty of shadows and lines, but the colors really wouldn’t have added to it, so I cut them out. Who knows, maybe down the line I’ll just leave the colors back in on it. Gotta love the digital workroom right?

See ya tomorrow,

Radio Lollipop’s 14th Birthday Bash

A couple weeks ago I had the pleasure of shooting, by far, my most entertaining event.

My friend Melissa has spent the past couple years volunteering her time at Miami Children’s Hospital, with the amazing people at Radio Lollipop. If you are looking for either an opportunity to volunteer, or you’re looking for an organization to send a donation to, you’d be hard pressed to find a more worthy organization. They in a literal sense, are an in hospital radio station specifically for the in patient kids. There are a whole lot of kids that are at the hospital with heavy diseases that can’t go home for a while. Radio lollipop hosts not only music, but also has giveaways and events for the kids that are at the hospital. Really, really, great work.

RadioLollipop3

So yeah, back to Melissa. About a month ago, I get a phone call, it’s her and she’s asking me to take some pictures of the 14th anniversary party of Radio Lollipop. I figured, OK, this could be fun. Didn’t really have any plans for a Thursday anyway. I wasn’t expecting much, but hey, any excuse to be allowed, nay, requested to take pictures is a dream come true.

I got dressed sort of western, it was a Toy Story theme, grabbed my gear and ran over to the hospital immediately after work to get ready.

I show up to the calm before the storm. Volunteers dressed up, but no kids. Luckily even though there was a ton of traffic, I got there early. I got some baseline shots to get my settings close and waited for the fireworks to start. I spent the next three and a half hours following around the Toy Story crew, visiting a bunch of smiling faces. Generally we’d get requested to visit by a patient, and we’d head out. Generally we’d go from room to room. We didn’t sit down until the event was over at 9:00PM-ish. I got a ton of pictures, and loved every minute of the evening. It felt amazing to be a part of what felt like a moment. The kids loved it, and everyone was happy, so I guess mission accomplished.

I’ve already volunteered myself for any other events they might be throwing, so here’s hoping they want me back. :)

I’m putting the pictures up now, mainly because I wanted to make sure it was ok with the hosts of the party. Hope you guys like.

The Last Exorcism…or is it?

Well tonight I saw the grand film that I was hoping would give me shivers and make me jump a few times…
LastExorcism
Yeah, didn’t happen. It’s more of a “What’s going to happen”, than a “AAAAH! Lookit that!”. I was looking for the latter, so I wasn’t very enthused about the movie. For what it was, it was good. It was an honest to goodness, old school horror flick. If you’re thinking about watching it, just wait till you can rent it. Not really worth the movie theater prices.

I did end up getting a nice shot of the sconces while I was in the theater. I <3 the 50mm f1.4. Probably my favorite/ most usable lens on any format.
MovieSconces
This was one shot, no post other than cropping to 16:9 format. I wanted it as a wallpaper :)

As usual, I thank my beautiful girlfriend,
GenaReclined
and my friends Daniella, and Andres for helping make the movie experience more…memorable. DanierraAndres

Too many things!

Sheesh been a busy few weeks. Full of action, intrigue, and dirt. Lots and lots of dirt.

I’ve spent the past couple of weeks working at the site, and it’s been boiling, and either raining, or humid. Or humiraining… It’s been gross. Though I have gained a sexy farmers tan. Oh yeah, good looking tan on the exterior, pasty white I.T. guy on the inside ;D

I’ve also decided that the folks that created the “RealFeel” temperature thing are evil. It was bad enough when it says 93-95 degrees and humid and say “Good gravy it feels like it’s over 100!” Now I can look at my phone and it’s saying 94, but feels like 110. No, not a typo. A couple days ago. Realfeel was 110. Yeah, Gatorade is my best friend these days.

On the photography front, I’ve finally learned a beginner lesson. I finally had a metering breakthrough. Digital made me lazy. Especially the nice gear. The better the gear, the quicker you can change settings to get that perfect exposure (well, perfect-ish, looks good, doesn’t blow out the important parts and doesn’t look like mud, you get what I mean.) Recently I picked up a Mamiya RZ67 Pro. I know, I spend too much on toys, when I should really be continuing to just take pictures and refining myself and discover what I want to do with my shots. I can’t help it. Using nice gear is such a… I dunno how to really say this… It’s not that it validates you any more as a photographer, but it still feels nice. Wrestling the big cameras and tripods around with their myriad film backs and release cables, “Haha, I’m the camera KING!” …whoops, sorry got lost there. You get what I mean, I hope. The couple rolls I shot though were both overexposed, and I mean heavily. 2-3 stops over easy. Ektar does this really cute color-shift when you overexpose that much. Whites turn blue. You correct for the sky, the rest of the shot, turns purple. Lots of fun in post on those. This was one of the better ones: rz67-1

So I decided to go hyper-nerd on the exposure issue. I went to take pics with the Mamiya, Canon, and light meter, + tripod, film, cards, notebook, etc. I vowed to find out how far out of whack my light meter was, that I overexposed so bad. Mainly I wanted to see how I could compensate my old meter to be able to use it reliably. You know, it says ISO 100, but really it’s metering like 200, so I’ll just set it to ISO 50 when I’m using 100 speed film. I boiled, no breeze. Just all out suck-fest. And how far out was my old Gossen? 1/2 stop over compared to the 5D. So what happened to the +3 stops? I happened. I was metering pretty much, a la whatever, and getting a reading, trusting it blind, and going click. I had forgotten that old familiar rule, that all a light meter is trying to do is turn things to middle gray. I was telling it, “Picture of sky! It’s so blue and pretty!” and it was saying “Make it gray!”, and underexposing the scene to get a perfectly exposed sky. And it was so. I pointed at dark gray dirt, and it said, it’s too dark! make it mid-gray”, blowing out the scene to get mid-gray dirt. Yeah, not working too well.

During the test, I was forcing myself to expose for my subject, to get an accurate reading, and I realized I had been messing up pretty badly. All of you can laugh. Here I am trying to start a business doing something I love, and I can’t do the basics. Like I said, digital made me lazy. Thanks to the experience though, you can bet it’s going to make me a better photog in the future, no matter what format I’m using. The last test roll I had came back with perfect-ish exposures if, slightly uninteresting pictures. Oh well, was fun anyway. Here’s a properly exposed shot: rz67-2 rz67-3
rz67-4

Scanning this set of negatives was so much easier than the overexposed ones. Seriously. I can’t believe how confused about exposing properly I’d become. Then again. When you can delete the bad ones, and just spin a dial to get the exposure right, you don’t need to get it right on the first try. Damned if I’m not going to try for it though.

Tomorrow I’ll put up a story of a shoot I got to do recently for the Radio Lollipop 14th Anniversary party. So much fun! I don’t know if I could ever volunteer like these guys do, but they really do amazing work. I’ll tell you all about it tomorrow.

Event photos…for fun even!

Ok here’s a thought that my friend Daniella had.

I take event photos at, get this, events. I know I know, it’s crazy! Just show up to something happening, and offer to take pictures. One camera, prime lens, small flash and diffusor, and allowance to take photos.

Gonna give it a shot this weekend at the Downtown Summer Beer Luau. Beer sampling, live music, famous franks, and hopefully wild people doing wild things :)

Shot them an email, hopefully they’ll give me the go-ahead., and the Chiefs of Staff seem happy to have me come out. Awesome, it’s gonna be a great time! I know I probably didn’t need to, most folks are happy for a free photographer, but still. I want to do as much of this as officially as I can.

Now to see if the rest of the group wakes up on time. I’m lookin’ at you Tim. Just sayin’, you tend to sleep a bit.

What do you do when you run out?

I’ve always been a gear nut. I love buying new toys, learning all there is to know about them. I’m the nut that researches everything and up until recently pixel peeped. I like nice lenses and spend possibly way too much time looking over mtf tables, or at least I used to…

I’ve run out of gear.

Not to buy more, no, there’s an unlimited supply of stuff to buy. All of it guaranteed to make your photographs shine like the brightest star and have Nikon and Canon calling you to give you more gear because they love what you do with their gear. No screw those small fries, I’d only shoot with Hasselblad medium format digital and my point and shoot would be Leica. Then my shots would be adored and drooled over.

When I had an AE-1, I dreamed of having an EOS. Surely autofocus is necessary?
When I got my A2e, I wanted digital, cheaper than film, and more accurate results.
When I got my Rebel XT, I wanted a 30d, prosumer body and sensor. Better all around?
When I got my 30d, I wanted full frame. It’s full frame. It’s film again.

Now that I’ve got my 5d, and an assortment of very sharp primes, you know what I’ve learned? After spending so much money, time, and effort, I got better pics with my AE-1 Program than with most of my other gear. Why? Because I gave myself the chance to learn it’s abilities. I knew that camera without looking at it. Manual focus, manual aperture, manual everything. But I knew it so well that it felt automatic. I knew how to compensate for my “primitive” light meter. My shots were either dead on focus & exposure, or close enough that it didn’t matter. I bracketed shots without the computer telling me what a slightly overexposed and slightly underexposed picture was supposed to be. I knew when the shot turned out. Without needing a backlit high resolution LCD showing me a histogram.

Now that I’ve got the classic 5d (Classic, like it was old or something. It’s only been 5 years or so, not 20 or 30 like my other cams) I’ve run into the same wall that I had with my AE-1, when I couldn’t afford new gear. I’m forced to realize that it’s not the equipment that counts so much as the photographer. I can no longer think, you know, if I only had that 5dmkII, that would’ve turned out great. You know why? Because it wouldn’t. The new 5d is a magical camera, it does amazing things, but once you venture from “P” mode, it’s just another camera. A very nice camera, that does nice things, and shoots video. (Very very nice video). Still though, it’s a camera, and without the ability to use it properly, it’s just going to leave you wanting. I know my 5d. I can go into most any situation and be able to capture it effectively. With most any lens, I can get a good shot if I have to. Are there lenses I like? Of course, but I’m not about to tell a potential client that I couldn’t get the shot because I brought the wrong lens. There’s always a workaround, and once you learn it, you have another trick up your sleeve. I want some huge sleeves full of tricks.

Since being forced to stop upgrading, I’ve had to improve my eye to improve my photos. You know what? Any camera I use now is taking better pictures. Is it the camera then, or have I improved? I’ve learned about lighting and working on my timing. I still like new gear, and like to play with and use nice equipment. The thing is though, now that I’ve gotten better, I don’t need most of it, and I’m all the more better for it.

You want to talk about “classic” cameras? I’ve got a 1948-ish Ciro-flex, with a fixed lens, manual everything, and you even have to line up the film on the back manually. It takes “vintage” pictures. They’re awesome. It take pictures that would take hours on photoshop to recreate. And it takes them on medium format film. And the camera cost me $5. Yes it took me some time to clean, lubricate, and adjust the little camera, but the end result is more than worth it.

Seems we need to rethink “bang-for-the-buck”.

First wedding, Lessons learned

Just so we’re clear, I’m no wedding photographer. I do small events, cars, landscapes, architecture, and other things that don’t move much. Or at least, nothing that anybody will miss if I don’t get the shot.

This past Friday morning was my girlfriend’s best friend’s wedding. I already knew the couple and their family. Nice folks. They were having a rush wedding, so no real time to prep and go over details. They had a couple friends with cameras, and I was going to be one of the shooters. Somehow, it went through the grapevine that since I had biggest camera, I would be the primary. Ok I thought, no big deal, I’ve read every web article on weddings ever written. I almost exclusively use “M” mode on my camera, and have decent glass. I had backup equipment, and a nice pressed suit. This would be cake.

I was barely ready ( this is my opinion, my gf kept saying I would be fine, but that’s her job isn’t it?). I hadn’t realized how much exposing a white dress would darken a black suit. Av mode was nigh useless. I hadn’t realized that even though I was able to get the shots indoors, I would forget to switch from iso 1600 back to 100 for the outside shots, then back to 1600. There’s a lot to be said for Auto iso, lol.

The worst was my lack of crowd control for the formals. 6-7 photogaphers besides me drawing attention away from the group. Oh yeah, heads and eyes pointed everywhere.

Still, even though I’m sure the pros will chuckle, I wouldn’t have traded the experience for the world. There are some things you won’t learn unless you do it. Unless you are forced to work your camera and knowledge to your absolute best. When your best plans are ruined and you get the shots anyway. That nice fun either you do it, or you do it attitude.

I loved it. Once I got home and looked at the pics, I only saw the great ones, around 10 of 488 frames. Once I relaxed though, and looked again, I started seeing more and more keepers. Ended up with a good 150 shots. Again I’m no pro, but working like one, is something no amateur should shy away from.

Even though this post may have started on a negative foot that’s just my own doubt talking and isn’t a reflection on the families and people I had the opportunity to photograph. I love all of you guys. Thanks for making this such a fun event, and letting me enjoy myself as well as work. Thank you so so much.

Here’s my favorite shot from the day.

Again with the dieting…

OK, so I left the wagon, jumped right off.

Scared myself by seeing the scale coming close to 300lbs again. Got to 296 if you must know. I’m 6’6″ tall, and no matter how many people tell me I “carry it well”, I still feel it. My legs, back, and overall feeling of health is just in the crapper. I’m eating horribly, and eating too much to boot!

Went back on the Low carb truck, and so far am feeling great. Down to 283 this morning.

Something that maybe helping me is that I cut out caffeine. No coffee, no soda. Water. That’s all I’m drinking now, water. I had an orange soda a couple days ago, and didn’t finish it. Wasn’t as good as I’d remembered it. Interestingly I’m getting similar effects of feeling “energized” after eating a meal now, or just drinking a glass of water. So if I’m getting a little sluggish, I drink some water. Perks me right up. Probably it means that I’m not getting enough water, but I feel fine so far.

Maybe by breaking my caffeine addiction, I’m able to keep myself tethered when it comes to saying no to things like breads, and rice. I dunno, but so far so good.

Hoping to be back down to 250lb by the end of summer, my low point from 5 years ago (the last time I seriously held to the low carb ideals).
